6 College Dorm Room Essentials

Whether it’s your first or you’re about to become an empty-nester, sending your child off to college is exciting, yet nerve-wracking. With the new school year quickly approaching, you’ve probably started preparing for this big move. As a recent alum of freshman year dorm life, if there is anything I learned about packing for college it was to keep it simple! The less “stuff” the better! After all, this small 12 by 9-foot space will not just be for one person for 9 months, but also a roommate. While living in a dorm is unappealing, it is a rite of passage not to be taken for granted. It honestly goes by quickly, and before you know it, you’ll be back to pack up the place your daughter or son called home for a year, and most likely he or she will be sad to leave.

There are a few essentials needed in every dorm room to make the small space better organized and more enjoyable. Here's my 6 picks!

1. LaCrate tote: $13.50 retail

Design Ideas' first product back in 1984, the LaCrate is the "original dorm shower caddy." Store all of your shower essentials in one clean, easy-to-carry place.

2. Digit™ 3-Drawer cart: $180.00 retail

Our Digit™ mesh cart is the perfect storage unit. Its removable wheels make it easily mobile and its sliding drawers make it easy to find what you're looking for. Use it as a "pantry" for snacks, place it in the closet to store folded clothes, or organize books and papers for classes. Not only can it be used in a dorm room, but also in an apartment or office, making it well-worth the investment!

3. MacGregor message board: $28.50 retail

Use magnets and pushpins to hang reminders, to-do lists, class schedules, photos of family and friends from home, or pictures of new memories created at school. The MacGregor message board is a useful investment that is practical and playful.

4. Bergen DrawerStore organizers: ranging from $3.50-$11.50 retail

There is sure to be some late nights spent studying at your dorm room desk. It is helpful and relieving when you run out of lead for your pencil or need a sticky note to have them organized neatly in your desk drawer. Never again will you stress out over not being able to find a highlighter!

5. Lookers boxes: ranging from $14-$20 retail

These transparent boxes make it easy to find what you’re looking for! They are stackable and stylish, or can easily slide under the bed to make more floor space. Pack away clothes, paper plates and napkins, first aid supplies, or other odds and ends as Urban Outfitters excellently displays in their photo below.

6. Mesh shoe shelf: $22.50 retail

Rather than throw your shoes around your room or smash them into boxes, our simple mesh shoe self can keep your shoes clean, organized, and easily accessible.

These products are sure to help make this transition a smooth one!
